The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research – TNO is an independent research organisation, active in many different fields and markets. There are 14 TNO locations spread over the country, employing about 4300 people. TNO has clustered its activities into five core areas: Quality of Life; Defence, Security and Safety; Science and Industry; Natural and Built Environment; Information and Communication Technology.

TNO Defence, Security and Safety, Location Rijswijk (formerly Prins Maurits Laboratory) is an internationally recognised specialist on protection against CBRN threats. About 320 specialists perform studies to evaluate threats and protective measures. In addition we also perform experiments with chemical and biological agents to verify these studies. A second area of expertise concerns energetic materials. We perform studies to improve safety with respect to transport, use, and storage of explosives, including fireworks. In addition, a facility for performing ballistic experiments is available. TNO was responsible for project management in the PASR project IMPACT and has extensive experience in international projects. To improve our knowledge base we work together with industry and academia.

In the Airsecure project, TNO was responsible for the testing of the chemical detectors and the particle filters. In cooperation with other partners, it developped the method for risk analysis and used its proprietary modelling tools to calculate the expected casualty rates for the model airport. TNO is closely involved in efforts in The Netherlands for the protection of Critical Infrastructure.
